Travel with toddlers
Whether you are planning your first day-trip or holiday abroad with your toddler, it helps to be prepared. It’s surprising just how much equipment your child will need to keep them happy and comfortable.
Days out
Now that your toddler is moving about, it’s time to start taking them on all those wonderful trips you enjoyed as a child. A visit to the zoo, the park, a museum or the seaside can be incredibly exciting for a young child.
Once you’ve chosen your destination, you need to do some preparation before you go. Make sure your toddler is well fed before you set off. If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds choose off-peak times such as weekdays in the school term. Don’t forget to pack more than you think you need! Carrying a heavy bag may seem like a chore, but when a favourite toy or snack occupies your toddler, the weight will be worth it. Above all, take along a sense of humour. These trips are about you and your child having fun!
Going on holiday
Travelling with toddlers presents special challenges. They can be loud, can’t sit still and often get overtired or hungry. However, while travelling with young children is never easy, it can be made more enjoyable with a bit of forward planning.
If you are travelling in the UK
- Make sure you have a sun shield in the car
- In case of emergencies, bring along a first aid kit
- Keep plenty of healthy snacks and drinks on hand
- Bring a change of clothes for your toddler, especially if they suffer from motion sickness
- Remember to call ahead to make sure there is a travel cot in the accommodation, or bring your own
- Bring their favourite toy for comfort
If you are travelling abroad
- Ensure your baby has a passport. Visit direct.gov.uk for details
- Use plenty of sun cream, a sun umbrella, hats and light clothing to protect your toddler from the sun
- Sunscreen can easily be washed, rubbed or sweated off, so reapply it often throughout the day
- Make sure that your toddler has plenty to drink
- Changes in time zone can affect your toddler’s routine, so be prepared for them to be grumpy as they adjust their feeding and sleeping patterns
- Remember to bring something to keep them occupied whilst you’re travelling
Finally, if you are feeding your toddler Aptamil Growing Up milk 1+yr you can pack powder in your case, or buy it once you’re through customs, but it’s best to check with the airport before you travel.
