Aptamil Follow On milk

For babies from 6 months onwards

Even once your baby starts weaning, milk will continue to be their main source of nourishment. Aptamil Follow On milk complements their weaning diet by providing the nutrients your baby needs in a smaller volume of milk, leaving room in their tummy for their first solids.

When to use Aptamil Follow On milk

Aptamil Follow On can be used as a main drink, as part of a weaning diet, from 6 months.

Benefits of Aptamil Follow On milk

From around 6 months of age, your baby’s nutritional needs increase. For example, by the time they’re 7 months old, your baby will need almost the same amount of iron, per day as a 30 year old man! Many mums switch their babies onto a Follow On milk as part of a mixed weaning diet, as it provides more iron than First and Hungry milks.

Aptamil Follow On milk now also contains long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs) from the omega-3 and omega-6 groups. This means your baby can have the benefits of LCPs right up to the age of one year.

For babies under the age of one year, cows' milk is fine in cooking, but government guidelines recommend that it should not be given as their main drink. This is because it doesn’t provide enough iron or vitamin D, and contains too much protein and sodium.

What’s in our milk?

Aptamil Follow On milk is nutritionally tailored with our unique blend of GOS/FOS prebiotics, nucleotides, and extra iron, vitamins and minerals – ideal for this stage of your baby’s development.

What are prebiotics?

Prebiotic oligosaccharides, often shortened to prebiotics, are special carbohydrates that pass undigested beyond the tummy into the lower gut where they encourage your baby's friendly bacteria to thrive.

Prebiotics occur naturally in breastmilk and a variety of fruits, grains and vegetables, including bananas, artichokes, chicory and onions.

What are GOS/FOS prebiotics?

We add a unique prebiotic blend of galacto- (GOS) and fructo- (FOS) oligosaccharides to all Aptamil milks which are derived from chicory and lactose.

If you are switching to Aptamil Follow On milk from a different infant formula without prebiotics, you may notice that your baby passes softer stools. This is perfectly natural, as babies fed on infant milks with prebiotic oligosaccharides tend to produce softer, more comfortable stools as a result of their healthy gut flora.

Long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs)

LCPs are special beneficial fatty acids, from the omega-3 and omega-6 groups, which are essential for the development of your baby’s brain and eyes. World experts have concluded that the current evidence strongly supports the inclusion of LCPs in infant formula.1

Aptamil baby milks were the first company in the UK to provide LCPs in infant formula, supplying them in the amount recommended by leading nutritional experts. We’ve also recently added them to Aptamil Follow On so now bottlefed babies can benefit from LCPs right up to the age of one year.

Nucleotides

Aptamil Follow On contains nucleotides, which are the building blocks of DNA – a set of instructions for every cell in the body.

Antioxidants, vitamins and minerals

Aptamil Follow On contains antioxidants, vitamins C and E and selenium, which help protect the cells in your baby’s body from the damaging effects of free radicals. Our nutritionally complete formula also contains other essential vitamins and minerals. In particular, Aptamil Follow On milk has been specially formulated to provide higher levels of iron than standard infant milks, to help replenish your baby’s natural store of iron which starts to run low at around 6 months.

How to prepare our milk from powder

Our easy-to-follow guide shows you how to prepare a bottlefeed using our powder formula.

Wash and sterilise bottles and teats according to manufacturer’s instructions. Wash your hands and wipe clean all surfaces to prevent the spread of germs.
Boil freshly run tap water and leave to cool for 30 mins, unless otherwise indicated on pack. Measure required amount of water (refer to on-pack instructions) into a sterilised bottle. Do not use repeatedly boiled water.
For accurate dosage, always use scoop provided and level off powder with built-in leveller (if provided). Alternatively, level with a clean, dry knife. Do not press extra powder into scoop.
Add correct measure of powder to water. Adding too many or too few scoops can be harmful. The feeding instructions on the pack will give you an indication of the number of feeds your baby may need per day.
Screw cap on bottle and shake well for 10 seconds to dissolve powder in water. If necessary, cool feed under cold running water. Remove seal and replace with sterilised teat. Test temperature of milk by allowing some drops to fall on your wrist. If it feels comfortable, it should be just right for your baby. Do not heat feeds in a microwave as hot spots can occur and cause scalding.
Use made-up feeds within two hours. Once used, discard any leftover milk, wash bottles and teats, and re-sterilise, ready for next feed.

Remember to also sterilise your bottlefeeding equipment properly – why not download our guide to sterilising for step-by-step instructions?

Using our cartons of ready-to-use milk

If you’re out and about, a 200ml carton of our ready-to-use baby milk is a convenient option to making up a fresh feed. All you need to remember to take with you is a pair of clean scissors to cut open the carton and a sterilised bottle to pour the milk into. Some baby wipes or antibacterial gel may also be useful in case you need to clean your hands or the carton top.
