Tiredness in pregnancy

Pregnancy tiredness

As well as carrying around the extra weight, your hormone levels are changing and your body is busy sending extra blood and nutrients to your baby. It’s no wonder you feel tired! Although your energy levels may peak and dip at different stages in your pregnancy, towards the end most mums tend to feel the strain. Read our tips on ways to boost your energy levels and fight fatigue.

Pregnancy tiredness

Finding time to relax now will help you cope with the tiredness you’ll feel as your due date draws nearer. Emotional stress is just as likely to sap your energy as physical exertion, so resting your mind is as important as resting your body. As well as taking time out, you can also help to increase your energy levels by sticking to a healthy diet.

A few things you can do to increase your energy levels:

Pregnancy tiredness
  • Rest. 20 minutes with your feet up in the morning or a siesta in the afternoon will help to recharge your batteries
  • Literally ‘putting your feet up’ – lying so that they’re level with your heart – can ease fluid retention and improve the blood flow around your body
  • Stick to a balanced diet full of vitamin and nutrient-rich fruit and veg to boost your immune system
  • Iron-rich foods, such as red meat, broccoli or green leafy veg can boost your energy levels
  • Avoid sugary snacks – although they’ll give you an instant boost, you’ll crash soon after and feel even more tired
  • Eat little and often to avoid low blood sugar levels
  • Allow friends and loved ones to help
  • Treat yourself to an hour with a good book, some online shopping or a film – spend time doing whatever it is that makes you feel relaxed

I know how u feel i've been there i'm preg with my 2nd and find its harder this time around as you have to have energy to look and run after my 2 year old whereas when i was preg with my first i could rest as much as i wanted ( outside of work lol)

Iave to agree with all of you it is impossible , when i was only on my second child my hubby couldn't cope with me being tired and sick constantly! He was trying to work, look after our eldest and do the housework and he definately can't multi task that includes washing dishes to the extent that most of my kitchen went in the wheelie bin and he had a trip to argos to do instead and there was nothing i could do about it cos i couldn't get off the sofa lol!!!

This is my first, I'm 12 weeks and it sounds like I'm really lucky to be a student, I'm in my final year so it is stressful but I do get a chance to rest. Although, I seemed to have trained myself to fall asleep when I start reading, not so good. :) I am working nights just now and I have found it so much more difficult to get up the next day but hopefully I'll get a burst of energy soon... Delusion is a wonderful thing. hee hee.

Lilly93, I have had really bad sickness with my pregnancy (I am now 24 weeks), don't despair though, I went to my doctors and they gave me some tablets to help ease the queasiness....they were brilliant (although not guaranteed to work I should add), they really worked for me and would recommend to anybody who is suffering to go to their GP, it is completely normal for you to feel so sick, as it is completely normal for other people not to feel so sick. I also found that Boots do a sparkling water that is called Ginger Beer (in the Shapers section), that helped as well when I couldn't face eating anything to get rid of the sickness.

this is my 3rd. im 11 weeks today. felt sick all day with my other two. hardly tired except for a few weeks. only sick this time when i eat meat. hardly got an appetite and come lunchtime its a struggle to keep my eyes open. not good as i have one at nursery and one in juniors (4 and 8) come 4pm i have to lie down on the sofa. also feeling guilty on my kids for not having alot of energy. their dad works FT comes home and does dinner. i think i would rather feel sick all day than be tired. was tired from day 1 i think as lots of people commented on how tired i kept saying i felt so it is normal to feel tired so early on hopefully it starts wearing off soon!!

I'm just over the 8 week mark and I can't believe how tired I am. My partner reckons I slept for about 30 hours at the weekend, just can't seem to stay awake. My morning sickness is pretty bad too which isn't helping with the fatigue, totally wiping me out. Partner works out of town during the week so can't even get help from him, hopefully this part will be past soon and I can get on with enjoying my pregnancy! Oh and to top it off my favourite jeans are starting to feel just a little bit pinchy! :(

i am constantly exhausted feel absolutely drained all the time the tips are all fine and well but this is baby no3 and my other 2 are at school and nursery so its ack and forwards at least 3 times a day to the school, whixh is at the top of a pretty steep hill and the steps are killers. my family say to put my feet up and relax but who else is gonna do the school run nursery pick up and housework? my partner works full time and is a godsend now he understands how exhausted i feel he is amazing

I feel the same, this is my third, although my second is not at school or anything yet. I also work 5 evenings a week and don't finish until 9pm. So I feel real tired all the time. This half term has been quite hard for me as well as my youngest won't have a sleep in the day whilst her big brother is at home, and if she does have a sleep, she doesn't always want to go to bed!

I am so glad to read some of the comments here about fatigue especially from those in their first trimester. I am 9 weeks pregnant and I am so tired at times and I can get breathless too. I'm trying to eat a good diet but sometimes I'm just not in the mood for a lot of food. I've also always been a very slim, petite person of slight build so I'm kind of anxious about the possibility of gaining enough weight during the pregnancy but hopefully everything will be alright.

I'm generally a bad sleeper and since about week 5 I've been having restless sleep (i'm week 7 now). I get off okay but then wake several times...and then usually can't get back to sleep for several hours. It's affecting my motivation and focus for the day. I'm making time to rest and thankfully am working from home so only do what I feel I can...
I think my ethos on this is to carry on as much as normal but not to be too hard on myself. I'm letting hubby in on it gently so I can build him up to supporting me more as I need it over the months!
Good luck ladies, hope you are all doing okay xxx
