Morning sickness

Coping with morning sickness

When morning sickness strikes it can leave you feeling miserable. Although no-one’s really sure exactly what causes it or why, there are a number of tried-and-tested ways to ease your feelings of nausea. Read on to find out more.

Coping with morning sickness

As yet, no single cause of morning sickness has been identified, and it doesn’t always strike in the morning. Experts point to a range of factors; from high levels of oestrogen causing changes in your body to stressful emotions. Some even believe that the heightened sense of smell many women experience which often set off their nausea may be down to biological instincts to protect an unborn child from foods which may pose a threat.

Although it can make many a mum-to-be miserable, if you’re still managing to eat and drink a reasonable amount, it shouldn’t affect your baby. If you’re really struggling to hold food or liquids down, speak to your doctor or midwife.

How long will it last for?

For most mums, morning sickness fades by the end of the first trimester, although queasiness can come and go throughout pregnancy. Simple things like the smell of something you’re not keen on can cause nausea, but every mum is different when it comes to what sets them off.

Some mums suffer from morning sickness throughout their entire pregnancy. If you’re past your first trimester and still feeling queasy, it may prove comforting to know that morning sickness is thought to be a sign of a healthy pregnancy. But if you’re pregnant and haven’t felt any sickness, there’s no need to worry – each mum is different and you’re just one of the lucky ones!

Morning sickness

There are lots of reported remedies for morning sickness; what works for one mum might not work for another, and what works one week might not work the next. Experimenting with a range of the following remedies may help.

Ease morning sickness by:

  • Keep plain, dry crackers or ginger biscuits by your bed. Eat one as soon as you wake and rest for 20-30 minutes before getting out of bed.
  • Eat little and often – try a couple of bites of a cracker and some water as often as you can throughout the day.
  • Stick to foods with a high protein or carbohydrates content - a well cooked egg on toast is a perfect meal to ease your sickness
  • Drink lots of fluid – water, juice, milk, fruit teas. Ginger is renowned for soothing morning sickness, so try ginger ale or a slice of fresh ginger in your tea.

As stress is often cited as a cause of morning sickness, remember to make time to relax. If you’re feeling nauseous, rest. It can be hard if you’re working, but don’t feel you have to go into work if you’re not up to it.

If you’d like to speak to someone about your morning sickness, our team of experts is made up of mums and a midwife, they're here to listen and give advice where they can; call 0800 996 1000 or chat live using our instant messaging service, Live Chat.

This is my second baby, i had awful sickness with my 1st, it was unbearable... I'm getting more headaches/motion sickness with this one which is really strange. I'm constantly eating which seems to help... Also listening to my ipod whilst relaxing helps also.

My morning sickness lasted all day!! The advice above is correct. Not too keen on ginger, so I nibbled on a rich tea biscuit instead.

This is my second pregnancy and feeling sick all day, from the moment I wake till the minute I go to bed. I have tried everything that I've read to help stop the motion sickness but to be honest nothing is working. I had a miscarriage a few months ago at 8 weeks and didn't feel sick at all, so in one way at 7 weeks now I am thankfull that my pregnancy seems to be healthy. Who said being pregant is easy!!!

This is my second pregnancy, I was really sick in my first until 17 weeks then woke up one morning and felt like a different person and am holding out for that day this time!! I forgot how miserable it makes you - on one hand you feel so greatful to be pregnant but on the other you feel rubbish! Nothing seems to ease the sick feeling for me and I have tried everything. Tiredness definitely makes it worse though so I am going to bed at 8pm everynight with my toddler and that helps.

This is my second child - i am curently 10 weeks gone. Feeling sick all day, most days, just like my first pregnancy. Just hope it wears off soon cos its taking its toll - especially with a 3 year old running around all day. Some days i do just want to stay in bed and hide - its miserable some days. Its all worth it though! Not alot seems to be helping this time - fruit juice improves it a little, but thats all.

Hi, this is my first baby, and i'm currently 13 weeks, and although i realise i may be extremely lucky, wonder if its normal to have absolutely no sickness whatsoever? my mum had it in the evenings when she was expecting me, and then it wasn't bad either and my only sister had none either, just wondered if its normal?

hi, this is my first baby and I've been sickly from the start, earlier on I was just reaching to be sick about every hour, when I was awake and now it just seems to be ina morning and on a night although I am sick now. It is definately worse if I am tired or hungry but it's reassuring because I think at least the baby is growing and all ok inside.

my 3rd pregnancy and so much for 3rd time lucky! lol this morning sickness is taking its toll on me as well as the fatigued...ive heard lemon is also good, sucking on em or putting some slices in your water. i tried it but the taste made me feel sick (how ironic) but others should try it as it might work for you..

so my next option is light exercise and yoga breathing techniques...wish me luck! x

I'm currenty 9 weeks pregnant with my second pregnancy, and I'm being so sick that I've been booked in for an early scan tomorrow to see if I'm having twins!! I'm a twin myself but an identical one and apparently it's non-identical twins that are genetic, although I suppose I have as much chance as anyone else as having twins. Has anyone else got twins, and did it make you sick for the whole pregnancy as it did for my mum?? I'm terrified of feeling so awful for the entire 9 months - my 2-year old said last night she doesn't want mummy to have a baby in her tummy anymore because it makes me so sick and cry such a lot... Made me feel really guily, but she's being such a little angel and really helping me out, plus my husband's being wonderful! 'Morning sickness' sucks!!

hi this is my 4th pregnancy and definately cant remember feeling this sick with the others. im finding that if i eat constantly to mask the crappy taste in my mouth it helps dry biscuits, crackers, mints, boiled sweets, raw veg and fruit. no one is a wuss for not going to work these early days are really tough but think possitive it will lessen and you will forget once your bundle of joy is here. i find opening the fridge is my biggest trigger so i avoid at all cost lol oh try warm cordial rather than fruit teas much easier to swallow x

I'm currently 10 weeks and the sicky feeling is out of control. It isn't as bad as my first 2 pregnancies! maybe if I have 13 babies, I might not notice anything at all! Keep your head and feet up and your bottom lower, it helps to feel still and the sickness passes quicker!

Hi I am 10 weeks with my 2nd, wouldn't have known I was pregnant with my first, this one can definately tell! Feel ok until lunch then hot, dizzy, sick-you name it. could barely walk a few feet the other day! not ideal when you have a three year old to take care of! Ive found as it doesnt happen until lunch, eating big in the morning helps, then cereal after if i start feeling sick.difficult though, couldnt even bring myself to sip water the other day :/ hope it goes soon

Just when i think i've found a cure the nausea steps up a gear. Everyone keeps telling me that it will go in a couple of weeks but last time i think i was about 14 or 15 weeks before it stopped. My poor kids are off school for summer and i can't do much because i keep throwing up!!!!!

I'm 10+5 weeks with my first bubba and yesterday I think the number of times I vomited reached double figures in just one day! It's so horrendous. I've tried ginger in all it's forms (biscuits, tea, crystalised!), dry toast, plain crackers, travel sickness wristbands... Nothing seems to stop it completely. I have noticed that I'm less sick when I graze all day long on biscuits, crackers and walnuts. I turn up at work with my little tuck box survival kit and just munch at my desk all day long. The problem is, there are times when I just don't feel like eating, and that's where it all seems to go wrong!! So perhaps the trick is to eat little and very often?!
