2 month old baby

Baby's development at 2 months

Having lost that ‘newborn’ look, at 2 months you’ll start to see your baby’s personality developing. You’ll be able to see them growing bigger and stronger by the day – the strength in their hands and neck will increase and they’ll become more alert. It’s still a good idea to feed your baby when they’re hungry rather than forcing a routine because, with so much development, your baby’s appetite is ever changing.

Yet there are also other changes afoot; ones that you can’t necessarily measure with a set of scales or a ruler. Your baby is now better at communicating and finds your voice and your touch the most comforting of all. Read about all of these exciting changes in more detail.

Baby's development at 2 months

At 2 months, your baby will begin to recognise you and your partner – your voices will resonate with them. As their personality emerges you’ll start to learn their likes and dislikes. You might also notice that your baby needs less sleep and consequently stays awake for longer.

With so much developing going on, night feeds are essential. They give your baby the nutrition needed to grow and ensure your milk supply remains constant. Some mums find their baby begins to feed for longer, but less frequently. Other mums whose babies feed more frequently through the day may notice their baby begins to need fewer feeds during the night. At this stage it’s best to follow your baby’s lead and feed them as and when they’re hungry, but you may soon start to notice a feeding pattern emerging.

Feeding problems, such as colic, are common at this stage. Colic affects one in four young babies, although the actual cause of it is unknown and it can easily be misdiagnosed. Colic is not harmful, nor does it last forever. If you have any other questions about feeding or colic, our team of experts including a midwife, nutritionists and feeding advisors are happy to help. Other changes happening at 2 months

The comfort of mum

Your baby now feels comforted by your touch and soothed when you or your partner hold them – many start to comfort themselves by sucking their fingers or thumb or by using a dummy. You may also find that being held by someone unfamiliar can cause tears.

Your baby’s physical development

Babies develop physically from head to toe; first by strengthening their neck muscles to support their head, followed by their shoulders, chest and lower back. The legs are the last to develop. Your 2 month old baby’s body is continuing to straighten out which means less trapped wind. If they’re not already doing so, your baby will soon be able to lift their head and briefly when they’re lying flat on their tummy. As they grow stronger and their muscles become more reactive, they may move their arms when they’re stimulated or excited.

Communication

Your baby doesn’t need to form words in order to communicate; simple noises, gurgles and coos in response to your voice come instinctively, especially as your voice is probably their favourite sound.

Grasping and clutching

As your baby discovers their own hands, their instinctive grasp reflex lessens to allow them to explore different objects using a wider range of movement. Your baby will no doubt be fascinated by anything new, so encourage them with baby-safe objects they can get to grips with.

xxKatchx - my baby is also 6 weeks old, on aptamil one. She's already taking 5oz's, sometimes 5 and a half, but it still doesnt seem to fill her and we are feeding every 3hrs. She goes longer through the night. Have u tried using aptamil two yet? Did it help? I heard that the formula milk for babies doesnt fill them up, it's just thicker which makes them constipated.....is this right? It seems abit silly to me!

My girl is 5 weeks today. To all those asking about Aptamil 2 - this is my experience! At just over a week, my girl started to take 5 oz's of Aptamil 1 but would still not seem satisfied after a feed - even after taking the whole lot. She would also empty her bowels about 5 times a day. At 2 weeks, we decided to try her on Aptamil 2. She was still taking 5 oz's, but would wake up far less often. The downsides were, she seemed to strain a lot more to go to the toilet and it smelled far more pungent. She was also a lot more colicky. When we asked the health visitor, she told us off for using Aptamil 2 as she felt our girl wasn't ready. We took her off Aptamil 2 and persevered with Aptamil 1. She's now taking 6 oz's and still taking 6 bottles a day, but she seems happier for it.

My baby boy is 7 1/2 weeks old and has been on aptamil 2 for the last ten days and straight away we noticed a difference in him. He was taking 5oz and the last day we used aptamil 1 he took 14 bottles the milk was not doing anything for him he was crying non stop when he was awake through hunger, with aptamil 2 he takes 5oz and has 7 bottles in 24 hours and is now a happy baby in between feeds. I was told hungry baby milk can make some babies sick by my health visitor as the milk is designed to stay in the stomach longer but she said if we wanted to give it a go because of the pure volume of milk he was taking to do so but to also to try and make him drink a bottle of cooled boiled water every other day he only has 3oz but he has not been sick or constipated on aptamil 2 like some say.

Great to read all of the above folks. Zach is 8 weeks now. Been eating every 1&half hours -2 hours in the days for weeks- without sleeping. He has naps instead. His mls have slowly gone up to btw 110-200 per feed. Usually around the 150-180mls mark. I worked it out it about 27flOzs a day. But he has them close together in the day like he's storing for the time of day he actually sleeps. We've decided were buying stage 2 tomorrow and are going to phase out stage 1. He seems ready and tbh I think he'll be glad. He won't have to top up his belly to sleep in peace :) x

We started using stage 2 at 10am. He's seemed more settled and has still eaten around the same mls/flozs. I have noticed that he def seems more satisfied and enjoys his bottles more. I'd even go as far to say that his reflux bothers him less once hes finished eating :) all in all- so far no regrets. Will def follow my instinct next time and switch when I think it's time- against the HV advice :s

Hi my daughter is 8 weeks nearly 9 weeks old, I have been using Aptimil comfort due to colic and was reading the above comments and was concerned about the fact that all the other mothers
have mentioned their babies feeds increased to 4 or 5 oz, as my daughter will only take 3 oz and sometimes less at each feed. However, after reading Morewine comments does anyone else have the same issue when using the comfort formula??

My daugher is 7 weeks and I have recently introduce a bottle to her she has number 2 Aptamil at around 9 she then be awake until 11 and sleeps through until 9am -which is perfect and has only been doing this since I introduce a bottle but my only problem is she'll only drink the carton ones and not the powdered type. When I start to introduce more bottles it's going to cost a fortune. Has anyone else found this?

My daughter is 10 weeks, she is on Aptamil comfort, because she was constipated. she is now ok, but still has Aptamil comfort. She is feeding every 3-4 hours and is having between 70-90ml. Should I changed back to normal Aptamil?
